Our Beginnings

The Friends of Quarry Hill Conservancy began in February 2024 as The Hillcrest Aurora Terrace (HAT) Neighborhood Group, when residents living near downtown Middleton were informed of a developer’s proposal to construct a 5-story building directly adjacent to Quarry Hill Conservancy. The plan called for lifting the Environmental Corridor designation from the area and threatened the last-remaining Natural Urban Canopy Habitat in Downtown Middleton.

In response to this news, neighbors from Hillcrest Avenue, Aurora Street, and Terrace Avenue, all of which surround the conservancy area, came together to call on City leaders to listen to and respect their constituents and deny the developer’s proposal.

Thanks to the efforts of those original HAT Neighbors, now even more residents from across the City of Middleton have taken an interest in this special green space known as Quarry Hill Conservancy, located in the heart of the City. And from that interest, Friends of Quarry Hill Conservancy was born.

The organization’s focus is now dedicated to RESTORING the conservancy, which has long been neglected by the City, PRESERVING the habitat land for both the species that call it home and those that just pass through, and PROTECTING this unique Urban Canopy from further encroaching development that would threaten to destroy this natural green space.
